Found a post about funny student exam answers that professors had gotten. Most of them are math related, but still hilarious.
Most of my students don't even try the funny stuff, their answers are just funny because of misspellings or misunderstandings, etc. Here is an example of what I am talking about from Funny Exam Answers:
Later, the Pilgrims crossed the ocean, and this was called Pilgrim's Progress. The winter of 1620 was a hard one for the settlers. Many people died and many babies were born. Captain John Smith was responsible for all this.
Of course, when I read these types of answers I have to wonder if I really wasn't clear enough, or if something else was going on that day that distracted the student. The student answer that really made me question what I was doing in the classroom however - was the student that claimed France had bombed Pearl Harbor starting World War II. FRANCE?!?!
*sigh* I am glad it is summer.

The answers do make one wonder. I was often surprised by the blatantly wrong multiple-choice selections I would see. I would try and give a recent pop culture figure (or even two!) as a quiz answer for an 18th-cent. U.S. history question, and they'd select the figure from today. What gives?! Some answers were so off the mark (selecting Star Wars characters in a quiz on the Civil War), that I think they gave up and simply tried to be funny. They certainly entertained me and my friends later while out for drinks. - TL
I think that many people get by on being 'clever' in life, rather than actually knowing something. I suspect that clever kids - kids who are smart, but don't make the effort to really learn the material - hope to get at least some points for making their professors laugh.
Remind me of the line from Animal House: "Did we quit when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell, NO!!"
I get lulus like that all the time, and I try to control myself.
