Actually, I think the more accurate way to grade fast would be to just average together the grades the student got on all the other exams and add two points.
At the end of the semester I do a spreadsheet with all the grades up to the final, then I have it calculate how many points the student will need to get a particular grade in the class. For students in the middle ranges the grades pretty much already established -- those essays I can skim to determine if they either failed miserably or performed so brilliantly that I'd throw the point scale out and bump them up to the next grade. Since most students fall into the middle ranges, this means the only exams I read thoroughly are those where it might actually make a difference -- ie, bump them up or down.
